I always think of August as an Autumn month. The mornings and evenings start to get cooler even if some days - this year, at least - remain 'summer-warm'.
After a very successful event at Wisley with Craft in Focus in May followed by Surrey Artists Open Studios in June, I had decided a break was necessary. Felting, I thought, wasn't ideal as the temperatures soared. And yet, there was no shortage of eager workshop enthusiasts, so felting did continue!
BTW, if you didn't see it, I thought I'd mention again that I was featured in the last ever issue of Craft & Design because of my involvement.
My baskets and feltwork went back into the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen gallery in Milford in June, including newer designs, like the little rose trinket pots above, and some larger bowls incorporating chascona and wensleydale wools. The little rose bowls make cute gifts for all ages and a lovely memento for a teenager leaving for university, perhaps.
Meanwhile I hope you have been dipping in to my facebook page
and of course my newer page at
Note: I don't know why this new page has such a long link - but if you leave off the numbers it just displays an error message!
Very sadly Dawanda has closed. This has been a great platform for liaising with buyers and sellers in Europe and particularly those selling equipment and materials. I, like many others on that site, have transferred work listed there to etsy, so there is more in my etsy shop now. And of course I will continue to sell on Folksy as well.
While this website will continue to be somewhere to see representative designs, some being for sale, others not, The Surrey Guild shop will, for the foreseeable future, be the only gallery carrying my work.
However, of course, check out the Fairs & Events page for information about where I will be over the coming months and if you want custom made baskets or designs in felt, you can still message me via this website.
PRIVACY & DATA PROTECTION
Just a reminder that if you have not already done so, you should please email me at email@example.com if you would like to stay on my mailing list. We all now need to have your specific request in writing to keep your details!
You can see my 'small print' on privacy and cookies under 'OTHER STUFF'.
The cards below are just a few designs painted by my son Thomas who is a research scientist in Australia. Painting is his relaxation and an antidote to looking down a microscope. Cards are £3.50 each including an envelope and postage is included. A selection of my own cards can be seen at The Surrey Guild shop.
Wet-felting workshops for the autumn are already getting booked up, and dates are limited because of events.
I don't timetable classes but just agree dates with everyone individually. At the moment I am running:
Bring me a Rose - so you can make your own small rose-topped trinket pot
Pods and Pots - producing a bowl or 'pod' big enough to gather small items
Gone to Seed - smaller pods with a seed and tendrils to use as a room scent, and a great introduction to felting with a resist
Fun with Felt Flowers - two felt flower brooches, another great workshop for those relatively new to felting
These classes are 3 hours long (sometimes run over) and cost £45.00 including all materials if it is the first class you have done with me and £40.00 if you have been before. I also offer a £5 discount for your workshop if you bring a friend with you.
If you prefer working with fabrics, come along with your fabric stash or favourite little girls' dresses and turn them into a useful basket to treasure all those memories (see below)
Memories Basket classes are full days with a lunch-break in the middle or if you want to try your hand just at hand-sewn baskets, there is a 3 hour class, just making them by hand rather than also on a machine. The full-day class is £80.00, half days are £45.00.
The dye is cast!
Last year was largely spent developing my new work in plaster being sold under the name of Charles Cottage Studio (see Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Charles-Cottage-Studio-156427688341159/)
I have thought hard about whether to have a separate website for this work, but for now will be giving it a separate page on this website.
MEMORIES BASKETS MADE FOR YOU
If you would like to have a basket made for you, these can be made to order.
I call these Memories Baskets because they are made of fabrics that mean something special to you. This is a much better way to 'hoard' them, than a box of old clothes!
And yes, those of you who know about these baskets already will have noticed the name has changed. Someone pointed out the baskets will represent more than just one memory!
I can also make baskets in my own fabrics (or a mixture of both) but to match your colour preferences.
